Advance notice of end of support for Zoom Rooms Controller on iOS 8 and iOS 9

We strive to make video communications frictionless, safe, and empowering so people have the opportunity to achieve more. The upcoming release of Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad version 5.10 is part of our commitment to quality and security, which is why we will be removing support for Apple iOS 8.x and 9.x from this version.

The Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad version 5.10 and later versions will not work, update or install on Apple devices running Apple iOS 8.x and 9.x. The Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad 5.10 and later versions will not be available for iPads running iOS 9.x or earlier, and Apple App Store policies will prevent you from upgrading to or using the Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad 5.10 or later to install.

There are several iPad models that are no longer supported by the Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad, specifically those listed below, which in this case cannot be updated beyond iOS 9.3.6:

background information

There has been historical support from Zoom for using Zoom’s iPad Room Controller on iOS versions 8.x and later as part of the Zoom product line. We are ending our support for iPad 8 and iOS 9 due to the lack of ongoing operating system and security updates from Apple (last updated in August 2015 and July 2019 respectively), but in an effort to support new application features made possible by newer iOS releases and to address security concerns, we are ending our support for these operating systems. Since the above iPad models cannot be updated to newer iOS versions than 9.3.6, they will not be supported in the future version of Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad, version 5.10. As such, they will no longer be supported in future versions of Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad, specifically iPad 8.4 and iPad 9.3.

Zoom Rooms Controller Version 5.10 Release Schedule

Zoom Rooms Controller version 5.10 will be released on iPad in early April 2022 as part of Zoom Rooms Controller version 5.10. Additionally, Zoom Rooms Controller version 5.10 will also be available through the Apple App Store. Zoom Rooms Controller 5.10 can be updated on iPad models capable of running newer versions of iOS 10.x or higher; Zoom recommends that you run the latest iOS and the latest version of Zoom Rooms Controller on your device in order to upgrade.

How can I check the iOS version of my deployed iPads?

The following steps will guide you through the process of verifying the current iOS version in Zoom’s admin portal:

  1. Log in to the Zoom web portal by entering your username and password.
  2. You can then view the device list by clicking Device Management.
  3. Make sure the filter in the top left is set to iOS and not All Platform OS.
  4. View the devices you’ve assigned a Zoom Room to, including the device name and Zoom Room assignment.
  5. You can export a list of your devices to a CSV file if you want to process it in another way (optional).

How can I check if I have an iPad that cannot be updated beyond iOS 9.3.6?

Apple’s support site provides a guide to identifying your iPad model, which you can use to compare the hardware model to the list of hardware models on Apple’s support site.

What does this mean for iPads that can’t update via iOS 9.3.6?

Currently, Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad version 5.10 cannot be installed on these iPad models. Meanwhile, the Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad version 5.9.3 can still be used on the devices. However, it is important to note that if something happens that causes you to uninstall Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad Version 5.9.3 from Apple AppStore, you will not be able to download Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad Version 5.9.3 from Apple AppStore, to reinstall it.

Can I still use the Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad version 5.9.3 on my iPad?

On October 9, 2022, there will be no more iOS 8.9 and 9 support for Zoom Rooms iPad Controller version 5.9.3, which is the last version to add iOS 8 and 9 support. Additionally, as of the date of this announcement, Zoom Rooms iPad Controller versions 5.9.3 and earlier will no longer work on iPads running iOS 8 and iOS 9. A notification will appear on the iPad instructing the admin to set the iPad’s iOS to should be upgraded as soon as possible or that it should be upgraded to an alternative hardware platform.

What steps should I take to prepare for this change?

To enable Zoom to identify the device models in your deployment, it is recommended that you examine iPads that have been deployed to your Zoom account as Zoom Room Controllers, Zoom Scheduling Displays, or Zoom Rooms for Touch. Based on the capabilities of the device, Zoom then recommends the following course of action for the user:

  • If your device can be updated to iOS higher than 9.x, you should update it to the latest supported version of iOS so you may be able to use the Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad 5.10 and future updates with it.
  • Please consider replacing Zoom Room Controllers or Scheduling Display devices that cannot be updated through iOS 9.3.6 with a new Zoom Room Controller or Scheduling Display device that supports Zoom Room Controller for iPad 5.10. See recommended migration options below for more details.
  • The Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad 5.9.3 can continue to be used prior to replacement as described above.
  • Any device that has been designated “obsolete” by Apple or “vintage” by the company should be considered for a replacement in the near future as it becomes increasingly obsolete or obsolete. Below is a list of recommended migration options.

Recommended migration options

  • The Zoom Rooms Recommended Hardware Controllers list provides a list of recommended hardware controllers that you can deploy. Regardless of the Zoom Room (Windows, Mac, or Appliance), these controllers will work with any Zoom Room.
  • Zoom Rooms’ Hardware-as-a-Service program lets you rent a new controller for an affordable monthly fee.
