How to use Zoom on a Chromebook with our progressive web app (PWA)

From Chrome OS App to Progressive Web Application (PWA)

If you’re still using the Zoom Chrome OS app, it’s time to improve your experience by switching to the Zoom Progressive Web Application (PWA) for Chrome OS. Zoom is deprecating support for the Chrome OS app and encouraging its users to switch to the PWA as soon as possible.

Important dates to keep track of

To help you with the transition, here are some key dates to keep in mind:

  • August 2022: Zoom will end support for the Chrome OS app
  • November 5, 2022: The Chrome OS app is no longer searchable in the Chrome Web Store
  • January 15, 2023: Chrome OS users clicking on Zoom links will automatically launch the PWA created by Zoom
  • February 1, 2023: The Chrome OS app will be completely removed and no longer available.

Improving the Zoom experience for Chromebook users

The move to the PWA not only improves the Zoom experience for Chromebook users, but also gives them access to even more Zoom features on Chrome OS devices. Zoom encourages its customers to switch to the PWA as soon as possible to take advantage of these benefits.

Download the PWA

The Zoom Progressive Web Application (PWA) can be installed from the Google Play Store by clicking the link or by searching for “Zoom PWA” or “Zoom for Chrome PWA” in the Play Store. After downloading the app, you can sign in or join a meeting and use it.

Install PWA

You can install the PWA directly via the navigation bar of your web browser or via the central administrator management. Once installed, the PWA appears as an application on your Chrome OS device, providing you with an app-like experience while using the same technology as your web browser and Chrome OS.

Benefits of the PWA

The PWA is faster and more functional than regular apps, takes up less storage space, and is great for cloud-based devices. Zoom is working with Google to create the best possible application experience on Chrome OS and is excited to offer a PWA client that offers users even more features and improved performance. The PWA will automatically receive updates when Zoom updates its web client.

For system administrators

If you are a system administrator, you can still install and manage the PWA remotely and provide centralized configuration and security options. Visit Zoom’s support site for more information on automatically launching the PWA for your users.
